A PASSION FOR FLOWERS AND SUSTAINABILITY
A passion for flowers, and a desire to forge a career that could accommodate caring for my two children, led me to start up Dora Flora Flowers in 2017.
As you may have guessed from the logo, Dora Flora Flowers is named after my labradoodle, Dora, who had a passion for eating flowers as a puppy!
My bouquets are seasonally designed and therefore will vary throughout the year. I am passionate about the use of British, locally grown flowers where possible and eliminating waste, particularly single use plastic, from my designs.
Before Dora Flora I worked as a lawyer and I apply the rigorous attention to detail I learned there to create beautiful bespoke arrangements for all occasions.
I am based in Whiteparish in Wiltshire, 2 miles from the Hampshire boundary, where I work in my lovely little workshop at the home that I share with my husband, two children and Dora!
ETHOS
I believe in eliminating single use plastic and waste as much as possible. This is why you will not find any single use plastic in my designs and all packaging materials are recyclable. Where possible, the packaging materials are also made from recycled materials.
Bouquets are wrapped in recyclable kraft paper and fastened with plastic free kraft tape. Luxury bouquets are wrapped in recycled, recyclable acid free tissue paper.
Posted bouquets are delivered in cardboard boxes sealed with plastic free kraft tape and can be reused or placed for recycling with tape intact.
Posted bouquets will arrive with a cellophane aqua pack to keep the flowers fresh. The cellophane is 100% biodegradable and compostable. It is best composted in your home compost, if possible.
All local bouquets are delivered personally by Gemma to ensure excellent customer service, in a zero emissions electric vehicle.
Dora Flora no longer uses floral foam. Some wedding and funeral arrangements use Agrawool, a natural and degradable product. It is, however, still a manufactured and single use product and I endeavour to use alternatives wherever possible.
From an environmental perspective, British grown flowers usually have a lower carbon footprint than imported flowers. British flower bouquets are always available on request and Dora Flora sources its locally grown flowers from several small farms near Salisbury.
However, it must be borne in mind that British flowers are seasonally restrictive and/or may be grown in energy intensive conditions (heated polytunnels). Dora Flora is also conscious that cut flower exports are an essential economy to many developing countries, particularly in North Africa, and flowers can be grown in an environmentally sympathetic manner where climatic conditions are ideal. Dora Flora therefore supports the importation of cut flowers in theory but would like wholesalers to find alternatives to plastic for packaging flowers. I am working on this!
I will always welcome your own thoughts and suggestions on my approach to sustainable and environmentally sympathetic floristry. Please do drop me an email if you would like to extend this conversation.
