Make your pumpkin a flower showstopper

For my first blog post, I thought I would give you some ideas for making a floral pumpkin arrangement.

The pumpkin acts as a vessel for the flower arrangement. In fact, the easiest way to achieve this is to carve out the pumpkin and then insert a jam jar into the opening.

Fill the jam jar with water and then insert your chosen flowers and foliage to make a beautiful arrangement.

The difficulty with this design is stopping your pumpkin from turning into a moldy mess, which will in turn cause the flowers to die. In my first attempt, i coated the insides of the pumpkin with oil, to limit the flesh's exposure to air. This did not work! The pumpkin was very moldy inside within a week. Not a disaster, you might say, given the relative brevity of Halloween, but there must be a way to improve.

This time, I am going to cover the inside of the pumpkin with biodegradable cellophane prior to inserting the jam jar. I will let you know the result!
